Nyepi – Silent Day in Bali

A Family Pathway to Embracing Culture Together

Once a year, the island of Bali falls into complete stillness. Nyepi is akin to Balinese New Year and a great way to experience Balinese Culture while on holiday. Family travel is a great opportunity for kids to learn about the traditions of Bali.

Bali Villa

Nyepi, or Silent Day in Bali, is a truly unique experience—no flights, no cars, no noise, and no lights. Even tourists must stay indoors for 24 hours. It might sound intense, but trust us – it’s one of the most beautiful cultural experiences you’ll ever have.

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a Bali regular, experiencing Nyepi with the fam requires a little planning. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this special day.

What is Nyepi?

Bali Villa

Following the Balinese calendar, Nyepi is Bali’s Hindu New Year and a time for spiritual reflection, self-purification, and resetting energy for the year ahead. It’s not just a day of silence—it’s a sacred tradition where the entire island pauses to cleanse itself.

Before Nyepi begins, Balinese communities hold lively ceremonies all across the island. Then, from 6 AM on Nyepi day until 6 AM the next morning, everything stops:

No travel – The airport closes, roads are empty, and no one leaves their homes.
No entertainment – No TV, loud music, or social activities.
No Bright Lighting – Bright lights are turned off at night to keep the island in complete darkness.
No work – Everyone takes the day off.

It’s a digital detox, a nature reset. And for families, it’s a beautiful way to reconnect and see Bali in a whole new light.

The great thing about a Bali Villa stay is you have your own space to continue with your holiday, have a quiet dip, laze on the day bed and watch some movies together. The Villa staff will help to have some ready to heat meals prepared and you can enjoy the magic of this Balinese tradition.

The Night Before: The Magical Ogoh-Ogoh Parade

Bali Villa

For the evening before Nyepi, you cannot miss the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade! It’s an electrifying, once-in-a-lifetime experience for all ages.

In the months leading up to Nyepi, every banjar (Balinese neighborhood) works together to create Ogoh-Ogoh – giant demon-like figures that represent spiritual forces of chaos.

These towering figures, crafted from bamboo, paper-mâché, and cloth, often feature modern touches like lighting and hydraulics, showcasing both tradition and innovation.

On the eve of Nyepi, the statues are paraded with music and dance, then burned in a ritual to restore balance between seen and unseen realms, transforming disruptive energies into harmony.

Where to see the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade? Ask our team for recommendations based on where you’re staying!

How Does Nyepi Affect Your Holiday?

If you’re visiting Bali in March, Nyepi will affect your trip for one full day. Here’s what you need to know:

Everything is closed. Restaurants, supermarkets, attractions, and even the airport shut down.
You must stay inside your accommodation—walking around outside is not allowed.
WiFi and phone networks may be slow
No loud noises, lights, or music. Hotels dim their lights, and bright screens should be kept minimal.

With no city lights, the Bali night sky becomes a breathtaking spectacle. Just imagine laying out in the garden, staring up at the stars and looking for constellations with your kids on the clearest night of the year!

With the right mindset (and a comfy villa), Nyepi is an incredible opportunity for family bonding and cultural immersion. Don’t forget to star gaze!
